The world of wine

The La Rioja wine region lies in the EbroValley. Cut off to the north by the Sierra de Cantabria and to the south by the Sierra de la Demanda, it enjoys a privileged position in the cultivation of the grape vine.

Although it doesn’t cover a great area, the La Rioja region contains a range of different soils and climatic conditions. This favours the growth of the vine, and gives it the different characteristics that our wines are famous for.

As the terrain of La Rioja descends from West to East, the climate becomes increasingly warmer and drier due to the influence of the Mediterranean.

This range of terrain does not affect the quality of the wine, as Rioja is made with grapes particular to each of the different areas.

The diversity of the terrain and the climate divide this wine region into three sub-regions: Upper La Rioja, Lower La Rioja and the La Rioja Alavesa.

VARIETIES OF GRAPE

The passage of time, together with the wine growers' expertise, have led to the natural selection of those varieties of grape which are best adapted to the climate and soils of La Rioja and which are, at the same time, capable of providing the highest quality wines. This historic process lies behind the seven varieties that are authorised today by the Official Rioja Denomination of Origin Regulations.
